Lauper began her career as a singer in the early 1970s when she joined a few cover bands. One of them was named Doc West, and he sang both disco and Janis Joplin.

Later, a New York City group known as Flyer performed songs by Bad Company, Jefferson Airplane, and Led Zeppelin, among others.

Lauper was performing, but she disliked singing songs by other musicians. In 1977, Lauper was unable to sing for a year due to an injury to her vocal cords.

Doctors predicted that she would never sing again, but vocal teacher Katie Agresta helped her rediscover her voice.
