Early Life
Bobby Flay was born on December 10, 1964, in New York City, New York, and grew up on Manhattan’s affluent Upper East Side. He dropped out of high school at the age of 17 and accepted a job cooking salads at Joe Allen Restaurant in New York’s Theatre District, where he claims he discovered his culinary genius. Flay’s inherent talent attracted Joe Allen, who agreed to cover his tuition at the French Culinary Institute. Flay graduated from FCI as a member of the institute’s first graduating class in 1984 with a degree in culinary arts.
With this degree in hand, he found work as a sous chef in New York, and then another opportunity presented itself when the executive chef at the Brighton Grill on Third Avenue was fired, and Flay was asked to step up and fill the role on short notice. However, it didn’t take long for Flay to realize that he lacked the necessary experience to run a kitchen on his own, so he quit and was hired as a chef at Bud and Jams under restauranteur Jonathan Waxman, whom Flay credits with introducing him to the southwestern and Cajun cuisines that would become his career signatures.

Bobby Flay made a few celebrity real estate headlines in the summer of 2017 when he listed his luxury duplex condo in New York City’s Chelsea district for $7 million, then (in a rare move) increased the price to $7.25 million.
