Professionally, Matt Keough started his journey as a baseball player as an infielder. Later, he played as a pitcher when his performance in double-A was disappointing.

In 1977, he joined the Oakland Athletics. With the team, he made his MLB debut on the 3rd of September 1977. In his rookie year 1978, he made ERA 3.24 in the All-Star Game.

 The following year, Matt Keough ended the season with the winning percentage of 0.105.

However, in 1980, he made an incredible comeback with a 16-13 mark. The same year, he received AL Comeback Player of the Year. Moving forward, in 1982, his career collapsed with 18 losses and 11 wins in the season.

In mid-1983, Athletics traded him to New York Yankees. He was with the team for a year till 1984. Later, he joined St. Louis Cardinals in 1985 and Chicago Cubs in 1986. In 1987, he joined Hanshin Tigers in Japan. For the team, he pitched three years till 1990.

After that, Matt Keough tried to play in Anaheim Angels, however, he could not make it through. His career as a professional baseball ended in 1992 he got injured.

Ending his career as a pitcher, he explored his career as a pitching coach for Angels. Also, he worked with the team as an executive until 1999. Later, he joined Tampa Bay Devil Rays. As of now, he is an executive for Oakland Athletics.
