Pinwheel Hearts Recipe

I first tried this recipe at a brunch and couldn’t wait to make it myself. For Valentine’s Day, I thought it would be fun to shape the pinwheels (normally just circles) into hearts. Aren’t they cute? The fun part is that you can use any filling you desire, but I definitely recommend that you try the cream cheese and sausage combination (yummy!). Ingredients:

2 tubes refrigerated crescent rolls

1 1/2 cups cream cheese (12 oz.)

1 lb. sausage (sweet Italian)

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

2. Brown sausage in skillet. When browned, mix sausage with cream cheese.

3. Unroll crescent dough keeping 2 triangles together to form a rectangle. Press the seam together.

4. Place sausage mixture on top of each rectangle of dough (image 1), and roll up from one short end to the other (image 2). Refrigerate overnight (or atleast one hour).

5. Slice dough into 6 pinwheels (image 3). Pinch the bottom to form a heart (image 4). Place on greased cookie sheet and bake for approximately 15 minutes.

Other Variations:

1. Cover crescent with your favorite jelly.

2. Cover crescent with a layer of cream cheese and a layer of raspberry preserves.

3. Cover crescent with this delicious almond flavored mixture:

6 ounces cream cheese, softened
1 teaspoon almond extract
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1/2 cup slivered almonds, chopped fine
