Ursula Owusu-Ekuful born Ursula Owusu is a Ghanaian lawyer, MP elect for the Ablekuma West Constituency and the current Minister of Communications. She was born on the 20th of October, 1964 in Accra, Ghana.

On Saturday, 29th September 2018, she was installed as the Nkosuohemaa (Development Queen) by the traditional leaders and the people of Akem Asuom in the Eastern Region of Ghana.

The ceremony took place at the Palace of Asuomhene Osabarima Ofosuhene Apenteng II.

She was born Ursula Owusu but she now bears the name of her husband so she goes by the name Ursula Owusu Ekuful.

She attended the Labone Senior High School and and later proceeded to Mfantisman Girls Secondary School to have her sixth form education.

She then moved on to the University of Ghana for her first degree and the Ghana School Of Law where she obtained an LLB. She was called to the bar in the year 1990.

She has also attended courses including one at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre.

Ursula Owusu Career and Politics

Ursula practiced Law for ten good years in Ghana then she ventured into the tech industry and worked as the acting Managing Director at Western Telesystems (Westel) from April 2008 to January 2009.

She also worked as the Corporate and External Affairs Director, ZAIN Ghana. In the year 2012, she was elected to be the Member of Parliament for the Ablekuma West Constituency.

Before her current position as the Minister of Communication she served on different boards and in different capacities in her professional career.

She served as a Managing Consultant, N. U. Consult Legal, Governance and Gender Consultants, the Director of Vodafone Ghana Company Limited, a member of Ghana Bar Association, an Executive Member of International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Ghana and a member of African Women Lawyers Association (AWLA), Ghana.

In 2015, she contested and won the NPP parliamentary primaries in the Ablekuma West Constituency again. She retained her parliamentary seat during the 2016 general elections.

In the year 2017, Ursula Owusu was appointed The Minister for Communications and accepted the offer to become the development queen (Nkosuohemaa) of Akyem Asuom in the Kwaebibirem District of the Eastern Region.

She contested won the seat again in the 2020 Ghanaian general election as the parliamentary candidate for the New Patriotic Party.

Ursula Owusu Personal Life

Ursula is happily married to a UK-based Ghanaian optometrist, Dr Sam Ekuful and they are blessed with a child.

Ursula Owusu Controversy

In 2015, she and other women MPs were subject to personal attacks after there was a dispute over places reserved for women members of parliament.

She was reported as saying that she was considering her future in politics, but the following year she became the Minister of Communications.

In April the year 2018, she suffered a lot of backlash from a section of the Ghanaian community when she shared a post on social media that suggested Ghanaian Muslims were intolerant people.

In the year 2019, she was suffered another load of backlashes when she made comments that “only witches are complaining under the Nana Akuffo Addo led government”.

After she won the Ablekuma West Constituency seat again in the year 2020, she decided to go thank her constituents but the parade went wrong as opposition party members began chanting “away” which angered the Minister of Communication. Check out the video below.

She is on the list presented to parliament for approval on 21st January 2021, by the president of Ghana Nana Akuffo-Addo, as the minister of Communications and Digitalisation nominee.
