Hooch the Mastiff (from the 'Turner & Hooch' movie) (Dog)

In the classic film Turner & Hooch (1989), Tom Hank’s character had a beer-drinking police dog named Hooch who was played by dog actor Beasley. Hooch was a French Mastiff breed (also known as Dogue de Bordeaux). Igor was the name of Beasley’s stunt double. In the climax of the movie, Hooch takes a bullet and dies after losing a lot of blood. In real life, Beasley passed away from natural causes in 1992 at the age of 14. Hanks also mentioned in a NPR interview that he recalled there being three dogs that played Hooch, but didn’t mention the name of the third dog.

I know, he was a good dog. We got along well. You know, when you make a movie with a dog, you have to work with the dog for weeks prior to shooting it. Otherwise, he won’t take his eye off the trainer. So, I would go off and play with I think actually three dogs that portrayed “Turner and Hooch.” It was a part too big for one dog.

Tom Hanks doesn’t have a cat IRL, but he costarred with a long-haired tabby named Schmagel in his 2023 movie “A Man Called Otto”. Smeagol was a rescue before becoming a Hollywood celebrity. He didn’t just get lucky though, he has been training since he was a kitten with his owner/trainer Brittany Long of the Hill Crest Canine Country Club. Tom Hanks’ one and only TikTok was posted in January 2023 to show off Schmagel and got 5.4 million views.
