The Blackening is a hilarious and smart new horror-comedy film in the vein of Get Out, Scream, and Cabin in the Woods. Will you be able to watch it on Netflix?

If you’re a horror fan, you’ve likely noticed that in many horror films, especially older ones, the Black characters die first. The Blackening is a new social comedy-horror movie that aims to dissect this trope with a hilariously original concept.

It centers on a group of Black friends in a cabin in the woods where they start playing a game that summons a dangerous masked killer. To invoke the trope, the killer forces the group of friends to “rank their blackness” so the killer can figure out the correct order to murder them all. They must use their knowledge of the horror genre to survive the night.

The Blackening stars Grace Byers, Jermaine Fowler, Melvin Gregg, X Mayo, Dewayne Perkins, Antoinette Robertson, Sinqua Walls, Jay Pharoah, and Yvonne Orji.

Unfortunately, the new horror comedy is not likely to come to Netflix anytime soon. On the plus side, there are a lot of other horror comedies streaming on Netflix, including The Babysitter movies, Day Shift, We Have a Ghost, Vampires vs. the Bronx, and Little Evil.

After its theatrical run, The Blackening will likely stream on Starz. It is a Lionsgate film, so it will get shuffled around a little. Lionsgate has a few different streaming deals going on, so Lionsgate movies typically start on Starz before moving to Peacock and, eventually, Roku.
